Lombardi paints in oils. Of particular interest are object study, landscape, Italian formal gardens, portraiture and studies of animals. In all of her paintings Lombardi strives to capture the essence of each of her subjects. She works to transform a basket, a vase of tulips, a cypress tree or a person into a statement in paint that transcends its reality. Subjects are chosen for their personal significance, their mystery, their form. Twenty to thirty layers of paint are used to create rich, strong images.

Light and colour are the vital components of her painting. Her subjects shimmer in light, be it day or night light. Shadows are almost as solid as the forms of her paintings and play an integral part of the design. Delicate tonal modulations are brilliantly observed, but not necessarily in a literal way. These images emerge as much from an inner vision as from external observation giving them an air of heightened reality.
